Wrentham Officials Warn Residents About High Risk of Brush Fires

Wrentham’s Fire Department is asking everyone to be extra careful right now. Dry conditions across the region have created a serious risk for brush fires, and with nearly 50 fires already burning across the state, it’s important to stay alert.
Fire Chief Antonio Marino shared that 18 of those fires were reported in just the last day. With so many dry leaves and dead grass on the ground, it doesn’t take much to spark a fire that can quickly spread.
Residents are reminded that open burning is not allowed this time of year. In Massachusetts, the burn ban runs from May 15 through January 15, and it’s in place to help prevent exactly these kinds of fires.
The Fire Department also offered a few tips to help keep the community safe:
• Avoid using fire pits, grills, or outdoor heaters until conditions improve.
• Be mindful when using power tools or machinery outside. Things like lawnmowers or ATVs can easily ignite dry brush.
• Never dump ashes from fireplaces or wood stoves outside. Instead, put them in a metal container, soak them with water, and keep the container in a safe spot away from your home.
• Always dispose of cigarette butts properly. Use a sturdy ashtray, make sure everything is fully out, and never toss smoking materials onto the ground.
Everyone is encouraged to keep an eye on fire warnings and enable emergency alerts on their phones. You can also check with the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services for more information on how to stay safe during high-risk periods.
