West Nile Virus Found in Attleboro Mosquitoes: Health Officials Urge Precautions

Attleboro, MA – July 29, 2025 — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in mosquito samples collected from the Attleboro area. While no human cases have been reported locally, health officials are urging residents to take precautions to reduce their risk of mosquito bites.
Experts recommend using insect repellents containing DEET, permethrin, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, especially during the peak mosquito hours at dusk and dawn. Residents are also encouraged to wear long sleeves, pants, and socks when outdoors and to remove standing water around their homes to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
“Preventing bites is the best defense against West Nile virus,” said state health officials. “Simple steps like using repellents and ensuring window screens are intact can make a big difference.”
Local authorities have increased monitoring and mosquito control measures to reduce the risk of the virus spreading. Residents with outdoor water features, bird baths, or other standing water sources are advised to refresh them frequently or treat them with larvicides where appropriate.
