North Attleboro chicken rules

North Attleborough residents who keep backyard chickens are now required to obtain an annual license from the town under regulations that took effect July 1, 2026. The new rules expanded where chickens may be kept in town while establishing requirements for licensing, property size, coop construction, and inspections.

Under the town's regulations, properties smaller than 7,500 square feet cannot keep chickens. Properties between 7,500 and 10,000 square feet may have up to four hens, while larger properties may keep additional hens based on their zoning and lot size. Properties in R40 and agricultural districts can accommodate larger flocks under the town's rules.

Chicken owners must also provide an appropriate coop and enclosed run. The town requires the structures to meet specific setback requirements, including being at least 15 feet from adjoining property lines and 20 feet from neighboring dwellings. Coops and runs must also be located at least 50 feet from wells, streams, wetlands, and other bodies of water.

The annual license costs $100 for the first year and $25 for subsequent renewals, according to the town. An inspection by the Animal Control Officer and Health Inspector is required after eligibility is confirmed and before chickens are purchased when establishing a new flock.

Residents who already keep chickens are also subject to the licensing requirements and are encouraged by the town to review the regulations and confirm that their property and flock comply with the new rules. Questions can be directed to the North Attleborough Animal Control Department at 508-699-0128.
